I know we are just heading into fall, so winter vacations might not be on your mind quite yet, but now is actually a great time to start planning a January or February getaway! There is something so wonderful about escaping to a warm beach destination in the middle of winter, especially after the busy holiday season.
Ward and I have a beach getaway planned to Nevis in January, and I am already dreaming about a week of relaxing on the beach, going on hikes, eating great food, and reading books. A winter beach trip is such a fun way to unwind, reconnect, and start the new year feeling refreshed.
If you are ready to trade cold weather for sunshine, here are 10 beach destinations to add to your travel bucket list!
1. Nevis, Caribbean
Nevis is one of my favorite Caribbean destinations, and we are so excited to be heading back! Located near St. Kitts, this island feels remote and peaceful, making it a wonderful choice if you want to truly get away from it all.
One of the things that surprised me most about Nevis was the food. I expected things to be a little more rustic, and while the island definitely has a laid-back feel, we found some incredible restaurants during our visit.
A few things I love about Nevis:
Beautiful beaches: Perfect for relaxing, reading, and enjoying the sunshine.
Amazing food: There are some really wonderful restaurants to discover.
Outdoor adventures: We enjoyed going on a hike and would love to explore more of the island.
Unique experiences: We took a cooking class during our last visit, which was such a fun way to experience the destination.
I love that Nevis offers a little bit of everything. You can spend your days exploring and trying new things, or you can simply relax on the beach and enjoy the slower pace of island life.
2. Turks and Caicos, Caribbean
Turks and Caicos is still high on my travel bucket list! I actually had a trip booked here once, but we ended up having to cancel it, so I would absolutely love to make it happen in the future.
What appeals to me most about Turks and Caicos is the beautiful blue water and white sand beaches. It looks like the perfect destination for a trip where you have absolutely nothing on the agenda, and that is sometimes exactly what you need.
Imagine spending your days:
Walking along beautiful white sand beaches.
Playing games and spending quality time together.
Relaxing by the water with a good book.
Enjoying the sunshine without feeling like you need to fill every minute with activities.
Sometimes the best vacations are the ones where you give yourself permission to do nothing. Turks and Caicos sounds like such a wonderful place to slow down and enjoy a true beach getaway.
3. St. Lucia, Caribbean
We visited St. Lucia on a cruise a few years ago, and I would love to go back and spend more time exploring the island. It was such a beautiful destination, and there is so much more I want to experience!
January and February are a great time to consider visiting, with warm temperatures in the mid-80s and the dry season beginning around this time of year.
Some of the things that make St. Lucia stand out to me include:
Beautiful mountain scenery: I would love to spend more time hiking and exploring the island.
Volcanic mud baths: We visited a really cool volcanic mud bath during our cruise stop, and I would happily do that again!
Romantic experiences: Between the scenery, quiet walks, and wonderful restaurants, it feels like such a special place for a couples getaway.
Beach time: You can spend your days enjoying the water and taking in the incredible views.
St. Lucia is a great option if you want a beach vacation that also includes a little adventure. The scenery is incredible, and I think it would be such a romantic place to spend a week together.
4. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Los Cabos is another destination we have visited on cruises, but I would love to go back and spend several days there. It is especially appealing for those of us on the West Coast because getting there can be so easy!
January and February are wonderful months to consider visiting, with average daytime highs around the upper 70s. This is also prime whale-watching season, which makes it an especially exciting time to go.
We visited Cabo in April a couple of years ago and went out on a catamaran where we were lucky enough to see some whales. It was such a cool experience, and I can only imagine how amazing it would be during peak whale-watching season.
Here are a few reasons to consider Cabo:
Whale watching: January and February are ideal months to look into whale-watching excursions.
Beach walks: While some beaches are not ideal for swimming, I love the idea of walking along the sand, enjoying the views, and reading by the water.
Relaxing resorts: There are plenty of options for a laid-back beach vacation.
Easy travel: From Phoenix, direct flights can make this a relatively quick getaway.
If you are looking for a simple trip where you can soak up the sunshine, enjoy the ocean views, and take a break from everyday life, Cabo is definitely worth considering.
5. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Puerto Vallarta is another Mexican destination we absolutely love! We have visited multiple times on cruises, but we have also taken trips where we spent several days exploring the area.
Located on Mexico's mainland along the Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta offers beautiful beaches, delicious food, and plenty of opportunities for adventure.
Some of our favorite things about Puerto Vallarta include:
Sunset beach walks: There is something so special about watching the sun go down over the ocean.
Fresh fish tacos: If you love Mexican food, you will have plenty of delicious options to try.
Whale watching: Just like Cabo, Puerto Vallarta is a great destination to consider for whale-watching excursions in winter.
Ziplining: We have gone ziplining here several times and absolutely love it!
Exploring local restaurants: We have enjoyed getting out and trying different places to eat throughout our visits.
If you are coming from Phoenix, the flight can be around two and a half hours on a nonstop route, making it a great option for a shorter trip.
I also love that Puerto Vallarta can be as relaxing or adventurous as you want it to be. You could spend your entire trip at a resort, or you could get out and explore the area, try different restaurants, and book outdoor excursions.
6. Maui, Hawaii
Our family loves Maui! We had the opportunity to visit earlier this year for spring break, and even with all the rain we experienced, we had such a fantastic time.
Hawaii is a great option if you want a tropical getaway without needing a passport. It is also an especially good choice if you want to combine beach time with outdoor adventures.
There are so many things I would recommend adding to your Maui itinerary:
Haleakalā National Park: Watching the sunrise above the clouds sounds like such an incredible experience.
Biking down the volcano: We love doing this and would absolutely recommend looking into it!
The Road to Hana: This is one of our favorite experiences and a great way to explore the island's beautiful scenery.
Hiking: I would love to do more hiking on Maui during a future visit.
Beach time: Of course, no trip to Maui would be complete without enjoying the beautiful beaches.
One important tip is to plan on renting a car. Having your own transportation makes it much easier to explore Maui and experience everything the island has to offer.
If you are looking for a warm-weather getaway with a mix of adventure, beautiful scenery, and plenty of time to relax, Maui is such a great choice.
Bonus passport-free destinations: If you want a tropical getaway without international travel, consider Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, too!
7. Costa Rica: Papagayo Peninsula
Costa Rica is another destination I would highly recommend, especially if you love the idea of combining beautiful beaches with outdoor adventures.
We visited the Papagayo Peninsula during spring break with our family and absolutely loved it. We are also heading back soon with friends, which tells you just how much we enjoyed our first visit!
You can fly into Liberia and make your way to the Papagayo Peninsula, where there are several resorts to choose from. It can be a pricier destination, but I think the experience is worth considering if you are looking for a relaxing tropical vacation.
January and February are especially appealing because temperatures are typically in the 80s and it is the dry season.
Here are a few things to look forward to:
Beautiful beaches: Spend your mornings relaxing by the ocean.
Hot springs: Head out for a relaxing afternoon soaking in natural hot springs.
Wildlife: Keep an eye out for howler monkeys, which are so fun to see!
Hiking and outdoor adventures: There are plenty of opportunities to get outside and explore.
Pool time and massages: Sometimes a little relaxation is exactly what a vacation should include.
Delicious food: We had such great meals during our visit, and the food was definitely a highlight.
The Papagayo Peninsula is a wonderful option if you want a vacation that feels relaxing and rejuvenating from the moment you arrive. You can fill your days with activities or simply enjoy the resort, the pool, and the beach.
8. Belize
Belize is another destination we have visited on a cruise, and I would love to return and explore more of the country!
With warm temperatures in the low 80s during January and February, Belize is a great option if you want to enjoy the beach while also getting out and experiencing something new.
What I love about Belize is the variety of activities you can enjoy. It is not just a place to sit on the beach, although there is certainly plenty of time for that, too!
Here are a few experiences to consider:
Snorkeling: Explore the beautiful barrier reef and look into snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
Mayan ruins: Head inland to discover the country's fascinating history.
Cave tubing: We tried this during our visit, and I thought it was such a cool experience!
Beach relaxation: Balance your adventures with some well-deserved time by the water.
Belize can also be relatively convenient to reach from certain parts of the United States, with flights through cities like Dallas or Houston offering connecting options.
If you love outdoor adventures and want a tropical vacation that offers more than just a beach, Belize is definitely one to add to your list.
9. The Maldives
Now we are getting into a couple of bigger splurge destinations!
The Maldives has been on my bucket list for years. We actually had a trip booked for 2020, but unfortunately, we had to cancel it because of COVID. I still dream about making this trip happen someday!
If you have ever seen pictures of the Maldives, you probably understand the appeal. It looks like the ultimate tropical getaway, with incredible turquoise water and overwater villas that make you feel like you are living in a dream.
Here are a few things I would love to experience:
An overwater bungalow: Staying in a villa with a glass floor would be such a unique experience.
Snorkeling: I would love to snorkel with reef sharks and sea turtles.
Beautiful blue water: The scenery looks absolutely incredible.
A once-in-a-lifetime getaway: This is the kind of destination that feels extra special for a honeymoon, anniversary, or bucket-list trip.
The Maldives is definitely a destination I would plan and save for in advance. If you are hoping to visit in January or February, you may want to start planning well ahead of time.
One thing I would love to do is get creative with hotel points and credit card rewards to help make the trip more affordable. If this is on your bucket list, now is a great time to start researching your options and saving for a future visit!
10. Phuket, Thailand
Our final destination is Phuket, Thailand, another place that offers a beautiful island experience along with the opportunity to explore a completely different culture.
We spent a couple of days in Phuket in January back in 2019, and it was such a wonderful experience. January falls during the region's dry season, making it a great time to consider visiting.
One of my favorite memories was taking a private long-tail boat out to explore several islands with friends. We even had lunch arranged for us on one of the islands. It was one of those moments when you stop and think, "I cannot believe I am actually here!"
Here are a few experiences I would recommend:
Island hopping: Take a long-tail boat out to explore the surrounding islands and beautiful beaches.
Thai massages: We got massages multiple times during our visit. They were incredibly affordable and such a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.
Amazing food: If you love Thai food, this is such a fun place to experience it!
Cultural experiences: Phuket offers the chance to enjoy the beach while also exploring a different culture.
Beautiful scenery: Between the islands, beaches, and water, there is so much to take in.
Phuket is definitely a bigger trip, especially if you are traveling from the United States, so I would recommend watching flights and planning ahead.
If you want a tropical vacation that feels completely different from your typical beach resort getaway, Phuket is a wonderful option to consider.

A few final thoughts as you start planning:
