Sedona is one of those destinations that never gets old. With its incredible red rock formations, beautiful hiking trails, charming restaurants, and peaceful desert atmosphere, it's easy to see why people fall in love with this Arizona gem!
Whether you're looking for an adventurous weekend filled with hiking and exploring, a classic Sedona getaway, or a relaxing trip focused on spa treatments and slowing down, there is something for everyone.
Getting to Sedona
Sedona is approximately 2.5 hours north of Phoenix, making it an easy weekend road trip.
If you're flying into Phoenix, I recommend renting a car. Having your own vehicle will make getting around Sedona and visiting the different trailheads much easier.
Be sure to make restaurant reservations ahead of time, especially for popular spots like Elote Cafe and Mariposa.
If you're planning early morning hikes, don't forget to pack a headlamp!
Now, let's get into the three different ways you can spend your weekend in Sedona!
Itinerary 1: The Classic Sedona Weekend
Where to Stay: L'Auberge de Sedona
Friday Afternoon & Evening
For a classic Sedona getaway, I recommend staying at L'Auberge de Sedona. This beautiful property has cottages right along Oak Creek, and if you book a creekside room, you can hear the water flowing right outside your door!
One of my favorite things about this property is the large double hammocks hanging along the creek. You can both climb into a hammock, relax, and listen to the water. It is such a peaceful place to unwind!
After checking in, spend some time enjoying the property and taking in the beautiful surroundings.
For dinner, make reservations ahead of time at Elote Cafe. Their fire-roasted corn is famous, and I've had so many friends rave about their food! Somehow, we've never managed to get a reservation, but it is definitely on my list.
After dinner, head back to the hotel and get some rest. No matter which Sedona itinerary you choose, part of the experience is slowing down and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
Saturday: Hiking, Shopping & Stargazing
Start your morning with a hike! Hiking is an absolute must when visiting Sedona. There are so many beautiful trails, and you could easily spend an entire trip exploring them.
Two classic hikes I recommend are:
Cathedral Rock: This hike offers incredible sweeping views of Sedona and its iconic red rock formations. It can get busy, so I recommend going early in the morning.
Devil's Bridge: This is one of Sedona's most iconic spots. The natural sandstone bridge is beautiful, but it can get extremely crowded. On one of my visits, we arrived mid-morning and the line to take a picture on the bridge was over an hour long! On another visit, we started hiking in the dark with headlamps and were among the first people there. It was a completely different experience.
If you're visiting during a busy weekend, definitely consider hiking Devil's Bridge on a weekday or getting there as early as possible.
Both hikes will likely take around two to three hours, depending on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the views. There is also a free Sedona shuttle that services some of the busiest trailheads if you would rather avoid parking.
After your hike, head into town for lunch and some shopping at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village.
This is such a beautiful area with charming courtyards, fountains, art galleries, shops, and restaurants.
Wander through the gardens, browse the shops, and find a spot for lunch.
There are plenty of great options, so I would just explore and see what looks good!
Next, make your way to the Chapel of the Holy Cross. This famous church is built right into the red rocks, making it one of the most unique sights in Sedona. Head over in the later afternoon to enjoy the architecture and surrounding views.
For dinner, you can eat at L'Auberge de Sedona or find something more casual in town.
End your evening with some stargazing! Sedona is a designated Dark Sky Community, which means the city limits light pollution to preserve its incredible night skies.
Drive up to Airport Mesa Lookout for a beautiful place to enjoy the stars.
Or book a guided astronomy tour. These tours bring telescopes and guides who can point out different stars and constellations.
It's such a fun and memorable way to end your Saturday!
Sunday: Creekside Walks & Natural Water Slides
For your final morning, enjoy a slow breakfast. You could order room service and eat out on your patio, head down to the restaurant, or simply enjoy a quiet morning by the creek.
Once you're ready, head over to West Fork Trail.
This is a gorgeous trail that follows a creek through beautiful scenery.
It's an out-and-back trail, so you can walk as far as you'd like before turning around.
If you continue further, you'll encounter a few creek crossings. You can also stop at the first crossing if you prefer an easier walk.
It's a wonderful trail for all ages and a great place to take pictures.
Be sure to check the trail's current status before visiting, as closures can occur. I love using AllTrails to check for updated trail information.
Before heading back to Phoenix, make one final stop at Slide Rock State Park.
If you're visiting during the summer, pack your swimsuit! You can actually slide down a natural waterslide formed by the rocks.
We've been a few times, and it's such a fun experience.
Even if you don't want to get in the water, it's a beautiful place to explore and enjoy the scenery.
After that, it's time to make the approximately 2.5-hour drive back to Phoenix. You'll leave feeling refreshed after a wonderful classic Sedona weekend!
Itinerary 2: The Red Rock Adventure Weekend
Where to Stay: Ambiente
If I were choosing one of these itineraries, this might be the one! Sedona has so many incredible outdoor adventures, and this weekend is all about experiencing them.
For accommodations, I recommend Ambiente, a really unique landscape hotel. They have these sleek glass cubes tucked right into the red rocks, each with a private rooftop deck. I love the idea of being completely immersed in nature while still enjoying a beautiful, comfortable hotel.
Friday Afternoon & Evening
After driving up from Phoenix and checking into your hotel, head out to Airport Mesa Lookout for sunset.
This is a short drive from town and offers 360-degree views of the entire Sedona valley.
Watching the sun set over the red rocks, with all those beautiful red and golden colors, is the perfect way to kick off your adventure weekend.
For dinner, make reservations at Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill. This is one of our favorite restaurants in Sedona!
The restaurant serves modern Latin-inspired cuisine.
I highly recommend requesting a patio table because the canyon views are absolutely stunning.
If you want to enjoy the views during dinner, consider eating before sunset and heading to Airport Mesa afterward.
Get to bed early because Saturday morning is going to be an early one!
Saturday: Hot Air Balloons & Pink Jeep Tours
One of the most incredible experiences you can have in Sedona is a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. This is something I would absolutely add to your itinerary!
There are several companies that offer balloon rides, including:
Northern Light Balloon Expeditions
Red Rock Balloon Adventures
You'll head out well before sunrise and slowly lift off into the sky, floating over the beautiful canyons as the sun comes up. Getting to watch the sunrise over Sedona from a hot air balloon would be such an unforgettable experience. I think this could easily be one of the highlights of your entire weekend!
Since you'll finish your balloon ride fairly early, head over to Coffee Pot Restaurant for breakfast.
They're famous for their 101 different omelet options.
The omelets are big and hearty, so come hungry and ready for a delicious breakfast!
After breakfast, head back to your hotel to shower and relax before your afternoon adventure.
Next up is a Pink Jeep Tour! This is such a fun way to experience Sedona's rugged landscape.
You'll drive over rocks and terrain that you would probably never attempt in your own vehicle.
Some of the inclines are incredibly steep, and you'll find yourself bumping around, laughing, and maybe feeling a little terrified at the same time!
It's such a fun and adventurous way to see parts of Sedona you might otherwise miss.
I definitely recommend booking your tour ahead of time, especially if you're visiting during a busy season.
For dinner, there are several great options around town. Here are three of my favorites to consider:
Pizza Lisa: This is a more casual wood-fired pizza restaurant from chef Lisa Dahl, the same chef behind Mariposa. They have delicious pizzas and really great gelato. And with a name like Pizza Lisa, how could I not love it?
The Hudson: If you're looking for American comfort food, this is a great option. They have a beautiful patio where you can enjoy dinner with some incredible views.
Cowboy Club: This is a fun restaurant with an Old West feel. It is where Cowboy Artists of America was founded, and you can try unique dishes like cactus fries and buffalo.
Any of these would be a great way to end your adventurous Saturday!
Sunday: A Big Hike & Arizona History
For your final morning, it's time to get out and explore some of Sedona's incredible hiking trails.
I have two recommendations depending on how adventurous you're feeling:
Bear Mountain: This is a more challenging hike that is approximately 5 miles round trip with around 2,000 feet of elevation gain. It's steep and rocky, but the views of Sedona are absolutely worth it. I recommend starting before first light and bringing a headlamp. Also, bring more water than you think you'll need!
Boynton Canyon & Subway Cave: If you're looking for something a little easier but still spectacular, check out Boynton Canyon Trail and take the side trip to Subway Cave. The cave has a really unique rounded tunnel-like formation with a large crevice running through the middle. The pictures are incredible, and I loved hiking here on my last visit!
Bear Mountain is the better choice if you're looking for a big physical challenge, while Subway Cave is a great option if you want a beautiful hike without quite as much elevation gain.
After your hike, it's time to start making your way back toward Phoenix. But before you get too far, I recommend stopping at Montezuma Castle National Monument.
This is an incredible cliff dwelling built into a limestone wall by Indigenous peoples.
It's located right off I-17, so it doesn't require much extra driving.
You can spend about 30 minutes walking around, learning about the site, and enjoying this unique piece of Arizona history.
It's a really cool experience and the perfect final stop before heading home!
Itinerary 3: The Spa & Relaxation Getaway
Where to Stay: Enchantment Resort
If your idea of the perfect weekend is slowing down, enjoying beautiful accommodations, and getting a little pampering, this is the itinerary for you!
For this getaway, I recommend staying at Enchantment Resort in Boynton Canyon. The resort has beautiful casitas tucked into the canyon walls, surrounded by red rocks and nature. It's quiet, peaceful, and the perfect place to disconnect for a couple of days.
Friday Evening & Saturday Morning
After your afternoon drive from Phoenix, check into Enchantment Resort and spend some time enjoying the property.
For dinner, I recommend staying right at the resort and eating at Che-Ah-Chi.
The restaurant has beautiful canyon views.
You won't have to worry about driving anywhere after checking in.
It's the perfect way to start a relaxing weekend!
The next morning, enjoy a slow start to your day. The resort offers yoga and guided meditation, which would be a wonderful way to get some morning movement and relaxation.
Afterward, grab breakfast at the hotel and enjoy your accommodations. There's no need to rush around or pack your morning with activities!
When you're ready to get outside, head out for an easy walk along Boynton Canyon Trail.
You don't need to complete the entire hike. Just enjoy the first mile or so before turning around.
The trail is conveniently located near the resort, making it an easy activity to add to your morning.
Take your time, enjoy the views, and just appreciate being outside in such a beautiful setting.
Saturday Afternoon: Spa Treatments & Sound Baths
Now it's time for the best part of your relaxation weekend!
Book a couples spa treatment at Mii amo Spa at Enchantment Resort.
I recommend booking ahead of time because spa appointments can fill up quickly.
Enjoy a couples massage, facial, or whatever treatment sounds most relaxing to you.
If the resort spa is outside your budget, there are also several standalone spas around Sedona that may be more affordable.
Another experience I would love to add to this itinerary is a sound bath.
I've done one in Sedona before, where we hired a guide and went out into nature. We simply laid on the ground while the guide played crystal singing bowls. It was such a relaxing experience!
If you've never done a sound bath, here's what to expect:
You'll lie down on a mat for approximately an hour.
A practitioner plays different sounds using crystal bowls.
The experience is designed to help you relax and reset. All you have to do is lie there and enjoy it!
Enchantment offers sound bath experiences, so I love the idea of doing one right at the resort rather than having to drive somewhere else.
One of the things I love about Enchantment is how many different activities and experiences they organize right on the property. If you want to add a little more activity to your weekend, you can also look into:
Golf
Tennis and pickleball
Scenic driving tours
Kayaking
Target sports
Rappelling
Guided trips to Antelope Canyon
There are so many options, but for this particular itinerary, I would focus on enjoying the spa, sound bath, and beautiful surroundings.
After your afternoon of relaxation, head back to your room to get ready for dinner at Dahl & Di Luca.
This is a famous Italian restaurant that is still on my list! I've heard so many great things, and I love the idea of a cozy, candlelit Italian dinner to finish off a relaxing day in Sedona.
Sunday: Beautiful Views & Peaceful Stops
For your final morning, head over to Crescent Moon Picnic Site.
There is a $12 parking fee.
This area has beautiful views of Cathedral Rock reflecting in Oak Creek.
You can take a short walk, bring a blanket, and find a spot along the water to relax.
Spend as much or as little time here as you'd like!
I think this is such a beautiful and peaceful way to enjoy your last morning in Sedona.
Before leaving town, make one more stop at Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park.
This is a quiet hilltop park surrounded by beautiful red rocks.
You'll find colorful prayer flags and peaceful walking areas.
It's a wonderful place to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and reflect.
This is actually where I experienced the sound bath I mentioned earlier! If you'd rather do a sound bath out in nature instead of at the resort, you could look into booking a private experience here.
Before heading back to Phoenix, stop for brunch at Creekside Sedona.
This is one of our favorite breakfast spots!
The restaurant sits on a terrace overlooking Oak Creek, so you get beautiful water views while enjoying your meal.
Their food is really great, and it's the perfect place to enjoy one last slow morning in Sedona.
After brunch, it's time to head back to Phoenix!
Which Sedona Weekend Would You Choose?
There you have it! Three different ways to spend 48 hours in one of Arizona's most beautiful destinations.
Whether you choose the classic Sedona experience, the adventurous red rock getaway, or the relaxing spa weekend, I don't think you can go wrong.
Honestly, I would have a hard time choosing just one. I'd almost rather stay for six days and do all three itineraries back to back!
A few final tips before planning your trip:
Rent a car: Unless you're driving from Phoenix, you'll want to rent a car to get around Sedona and visit the different trailheads.
Make reservations: Popular restaurants like Elote Cafe and Mariposa can book up, so plan ahead.
Pack a headlamp: If you're planning to hike early in the morning to beat the crowds or catch sunrise, this is a must!
Check trail conditions: Use AllTrails to check current trail access and conditions before heading out.
Sedona is one of those places you can return to again and again and always find something new to explore. I hope this inspires you to add it to your travel wish list and start planning a getaway of your own!
Until next time, get out there and make memories with those you love!
