All the Magic You Can Expect on a European Christmas Market Vacation

This week is the first episode in a four-part series about everything related to visiting European Christmas markets! In this episode, I will discuss why you might want to visit Christmas markets and what to expect on this magical vacation.

Let’s jump right in and talk about why you should add European Christmas markets to your travel bucket list!

1. The magical feeling you get to experience

These markets are just as dreamy and special as you might think. There are twinkle lights, adorable booths, and so many festive feelings!

2. Cultural immersion

Christmas markets started in the Middle Ages and have been a European tradition for centuries. I think that it is such a great opportunity to get to know the people and cultures of these different countries.

3. Unique shopping experience

Although our family isn’t usually into shopping, it was so fun to browse the booths. We didn’t buy a ton, but we did get a few fun things. Our favorite souvenirs were our wooden spinning nativities.

Be aware that prices for the same items can fluctuate throughout booths. So walk around and check out the whole market before deciding what to get for sure. However, items do vary from market to market, so if you see something you really love, get it!

Aside from the souvenirs, the food was amazing! We had so much fun trying different foods. Some of our favorites were crepes, bratwursts, hot chocolate, cider, filled donuts, smoked salmon, french fries, pretzels, potato pancakes, chocolate-covered fruit (the grapes were amazing and different), and chimney cakes!

4. Market activities

There are lots of fun things to do at the markets besides shopping. One thing that we loved to do was go on ferris wheels! It’s so fun and a great way to see the city. If you have younger kids, there are often little kid rides. Some markets also have ice skating!

The markets are usually open almost all day. They open in the morning and run until 9-10pm.

Tip: Pick one or two European cities that you REALLY want to see. Then base your trip around this location! Most European cities have some sort of market, so plan to go somewhere that you want to see.

Side note: Be aware of the dates of each Christmas market. Each market has varying dates, so make sure to look these up ahead of time. Most markets start at the end of November and go until the day or two before Christmas.
