How to Discover Fun Travel Destinations and Activities for Your Next Family Trip

In this episode, Rikimah Glymph joins us to talk about simple strategies for planning family vacations and choosing your next destination.

Rikimah is a travel planner with lots of experience planning epic trips! She has also been to 120 countries and knows her way around the world.

How to choose where to travel

  • Before Rikimah’s son was old enough to have an opinion, she did all the planning. One tip that she has is to Google Search keywords such as:

    • Most kid-friendly countries

    • Safest places to visit

    • Where is the best place for (insert hobby)?

  • Ask yourself “What do I want to get out of this vacation?”

    • Example: I want sunshine, beach time, street music, and something not too far from home. For Rikimah, Jamaica was the perfect destination for these requirements!

    • Think about what you and your family need or want to experience!

How to find things to do at your destination

  • Make a list of everything you want to do. Talk to everyone going on the trip and find out what people’s priorities are.

    • Narrow down your top 10 things you want to do.

    • Number them in order of priorities

    • Make a plan for each day to cover as many of these ideas as possible

    • Budgets can also help you narrow down what’s possible

  • Search specific questions about your destination, such as:

    • What are the top 10 best things to do in Jamaica?

    • What are the best kid-friendly places in Jamaica?

    • What are the best places to eat in Jamaica?

    • Where should I avoid in Jamaica with kids?

  • Connect with hotel concierges and ask them what to do!

    • Or if you’re in an Airbnb, ask the host for ideas of the best things to do at your destination

    • Locals will always have great ideas

  • Know your budget and double-check prices.

    • In some countries, they will know that you are a tourist and try to rip you off. So be sure that you research ahead how much things should cost so you can prepare for it and stand up for those prices.

    • If you’re trying to save money, find free things to do! Exploring cities and relaxing on the beach can be great options.

Other things to consider

  • If you have kids, you might want to look for places with good hospitals in case of emergency

  • If you or your kids have allergies, make sure you don’t go somewhere with those allergens

  • Decide if you need AC

  • Is public transportation available?

  • Try to pack in only carry-ons to avoid losing luggage

What are the advantages of using a travel planner?

  • Eliminates stress

  • Saves time

  • Travel planners know keywords to search to find the best things to do

  • This allows people to be put on payment plans to pay in increments

  • You don’t have to deal with issues with airlines or tour companies

What are the disadvantages of using a travel planner?

  • You will have to pay an extra fee

  • You won’t have as much control since your travel planner might not always be available to get on the phone
