How to Build One-On-One Friendships with English Learners in Ukraine
Join us as we talk with Katerina Manoff, CEO of ENGin, a non-profit that connects Ukrainians with English speakers. We’ll explore how building friendships across borders can deepen your understanding of other cultures, while enriching your own life.
Why should I try to connect with people from other cultures?
Often when we travel, we only scratch the surface of what the city or country has to offer.
Authentically connecting with other people is one of the best ways to improve not only our travels, but our lives as well.
Why would I be interested in meeting virtually with someone from a different country?
Genuine friendships and connections take time. Programs like ENGin provide us with opportunities to build these long-lasting connections.
Think of this program as having a pen pal, but without the hassle and time constraints!
If you join ENGin, you get to speak with your conversation partner for one hour a week! You’ll also have opportunities to show them around your town and share other insights from your lifestyle.
How does this work with a language barrier?
Being fluent in English is such a gift when it comes to connecting with people from different cultures!
Many countries (especially in Europe) study English and speak some English. People that you would get paired with on ENGin want to practice their English!
What is the process to volunteer with ENGin?
You will fill out an application and then have an interview with someone from the non-profit.
From here, they will pair you with a Ukrainian who they think you will match well with.
Before starting with your conversation partner, you will watch a two part training video that will help you understand what is expected.
It’s completely free to join! You simply donate your time to build meaningful cross-cultural friendships.
