Here’s everything you need to know to start planning your Moroccan adventure!

Where Is Morocco & How to Get There

Morocco is located in the northwest corner of Africa, just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain. Doug shared that the easiest entry point is Marrakech International Airport, though you can also reach Morocco via ferry from Spain if you’re already in Europe.

When should I visit?

And if you’re craving sunshine? Morocco offers it in abundance—Doug and his wife visited in January and enjoyed warm, beach-friendly weather without the spring and fall crowds that most guidebooks recommend for peak travel times.

However, fall and spring are the most popular tourist times to visit.

Is Morocco Safe for Travelers?

One of the first questions many people have is about safety. Doug assured us that during his month-long stay, he and his wife felt completely safe.

Like in any major city, travelers should be mindful of pickpockets in busy markets, but violent crime is rare, and Morocco hasn’t experienced major terrorism incidents in over a decade. Common-sense precautions, like avoiding isolated areas at night, are all you really need.

Where to Stay: Riads, Resorts & More

Morocco offers a wide range of accommodations for every travel style and budget. Doug and his wife stayed in:

  • Riads in Marrakech – Traditional Moroccan homes built around courtyards, often functioning like charming boutique hotels or Airbnbs.

  • Luxury Beach Resorts in Essaouira – Perfect for relaxation, complete with day spas, fine dining, and ocean views.

Be sure to read online reviews before booking to get a feel for the property and neighborhood.

Top Experiences to Have in Morocco

Doug’s trip included a mix of culture, adventure, and relaxation. Some highlights included:

  • Exploring the Marrakech Medina – Wander through vibrant markets full of spices, fabrics, and local crafts. Perfect for people-watching and soaking up the local atmosphere.

  • Hiring a Private Guide – An affordable way to dive into Moroccan history, architecture, and culture with someone who knows the city inside and out.

  • Atlas Mountains Day Trip – A scenic drive from Marrakech with breathtaking views and the chance to buy beautiful Moroccan rugs (yes, they can ship them home for you!).

  • Relaxing at the Beach in Essaouira – A charming seaside town known for its art galleries, ocean views, and peaceful vibe.

  • Doug also recommends getting a traditional Moroccan shave for the men—it’s an experience in itself!

Don’t Miss the Food

Moroccan cuisine is a highlight of any trip. Some of Doug’s favorites included:

  • Tagine – A flavorful stew cooked in the traditional clay pot with a conical lid.

  • Makuta – Delicious deep-fried potato balls, best enjoyed with spicy harissa sauce.

Doug noted that he didn’t see a single fast-food chain in Morocco, so you’ll have plenty of reasons to try authentic local flavors!

Language & Culture Tips

While Morocco’s official languages are Arabic and Berber, many people also speak French, English, and even Spanish, especially those in hospitality or tourism. You will be able to make it around if you only speak English.

Doug encourages learning a few phrases in the local language as a sign of respect and openness to the culture. It can make your experience even more meaningful.

Why visit Morocco

From bustling markets and mountain landscapes to beaches and rich cultural layers, Morocco offers a little bit of everything for adventurous couples.

Doug summed it up perfectly: Morocco has been influenced by countless civilizations over the centuries, creating a destination full of history, diversity, and beauty—one that invites you to come and explore for yourself.

So whether you’re drawn to its cuisine, culture, or scenery, Morocco just might be the perfect spot for your next couples getaway.
