Top 10 Ways Southwest Airlines Will Get You the Most Value out of your Flights

This week we are joined by Beth Vermillion to talk about all things flying on Southwest Airlines! If your family wants to travel and save money, this episode is for you.

Here are Beth’s top 10 tips for maximizing the benefits of flying Southwest!

  1. Earn a companion pass

    1. There are so many ways to do this. Beth has a whole masterclass about this!

  2. Get vouchers for delayed flights

    1. This is not necessarily guaranteed, but worth asking for!

    2. Beth recommends messaging agents on Facebook for quick responses.

  3. Turn vouchers into credits

    1. Vouchers expire after a year! If you aren’t going to use them in a year, book a flight you don’t intend to use. Immediately cancel the flight and save the credit for later! Be aware that the credit will now be tied to the person’s name that you booked the trip in.

    2. Make sure you keep track of your vouchers. Southwest doesn’t keep track of them.

    3. Vouchers don’t have to be used on the name they’re assigned to.

  4. Pay your flight taxes with a Chase Sapphire card.

    1. The Chase Sapphire card has really good travel and luggage delay insurance.

    2. If you use this card to pay for any part of the ticket, you now have coverage for your delays!

  5. Flights can be booked with cash and points starting in Spring 2024

    1. As of right now, you can’t combine cash and points to pay for flights. But starting Spring 2024 you can!

  6. Take advantage of flight changes

  7. Earn A-List

  8. Get flight price refunds

    1. No matter which fare you pay, if the prices go down, you can get money refunded to match the lower price.

  9. Know about boarding

    1. Southwest offers family boarding for families with children under 6.

    2. There are no assigned seats! You board in the order that you check in for your flight. So be sure you check in right on time!

  10. Close your cards

    1. Keep your card open for a year! And make sure you stick around until you get your anniversary points!

    2. This is a complicated step, so reach out to Beth for more information, or check out her guide.
