8 Places You'll Want to Visit on your Couples Trip to Athens

Planning a getaway to Athens? In this episode, we share eight unforgettable experiences for couples or families. From bike tours and rooftop dinners to hammam spa treatments and must-see cultural sites, you’re not going to want to miss this destination!

We loved our time in Athens so much. I hope you love it as much as we do! Here are some of my top recommendations of things to add to your Athens itinerary.

Athens By Bike Tour

  • We loved this bike tour by Athens By Bike! They did such a great job and we had a lot of fun.

  • We took this tour on our first morning in Athens, and I highly recommend doing this! The tour helped us to get oriented around the city and find areas that we wanted to return to.

  • The tour was also super great because they took us to all of the main tourist areas, which meant that we didn’t have to seek them out ourselves.

  • They offer both traditional and e-bike options.

  • This tour took us to the original Olympic stadium, the Acropolis, and to amazing city view points.

Eat Greek Food

  • This seems obvious, but don’t skip it! Greek food is delicious and there are so many great options around the city.

  • We loved the gyros and chicken souvlaki. The veggies were also so fresh and delicious!

  • There are lots of street vendors and restaurants where you can enjoy your food outside.

Greek Hammam Treatment

  • This is a spa treatment unlike anything I’ve experienced before. But I 100% recommend it!

  • We got a Royal hammam treatment from Old City Hamam and it was great! You wear a swimsuit for this treatment.

  • This experience begins in a very hot steam sauna. There are sinks with cold water if you feel too hot.

  • Next we were asked to lay down on warm tables in the sauna, where they began the treatment. They alternate pouring hot and cold water over you, while also using body scrubs and soaps. You also get a deep tissue massage on this table. This experience lasted one hour.

  • Afterwards, we rinsed off and got dressed again before being led to a room for a Swedish massage that lasted another hour.

Eat Dinner on a Rooftop

  • There are several hotels and bars that have rooftop dining spaces. We dined on top of our hotel, the Athens Capital Suites. The hotel was nice (not super fancy, but great)!

  • Even if you don’t stay at this hotel, I recommend eating dinner at their rooftop restaurant! We really loved the burrata salad, sushi, and steak.

  • I recommend going during sunset or later.

Visit the Acropolis

  • This is the number one thing that I recommend doing in Athens!

  • You will need to make reservations online ahead of time. Try to do this as soon as you know the dates you are going, as it will sell out.

  • I booked the earliest time slot available (8 am) and it was great! If you don’t go early, I recommend going at 3 or 4 pm. I recommend these times because it will help you to beat the crowds of tour groups and cruisers.

  • There are many awesome ancient Greek buildings on the Acropolis Hill!

  • I downloaded Rick Steves audio guide of the Acropolis and it was great! (We don’t love tour groups so this was a good option for us).

  • You can also get a timed entry ticket to visit the Acropolis museum.

Take a Food Tour

  • We love taking food tours! This one with Eva from SDF Food Tours.

  • This four hour food was exceptional! Not only did we eat great food, but we got to learn more about the culture, people, and history of the area.

Eat at O Thanasis

  • This sit down restaurant was fantastic! The kebabs were especially amazing. We loved everything that we tried!

  • Another restaurant we loved was Dionysos Zonar’s!

Visit the National Archaeological Museum

  • This museum is humungous and has SO much to see! We had a lot of fun looking around and seeing so many interesting artifacts.

  • You can find archaeological artifacts from all time periods in Greece’s history here.
